You tell me: Spiel des Jahres 2010

Nominees for this year's Spiel des Jahres award should be coming out near the end of this month.  Thought I'd see what you all think the nominees for this year could be...

  1. So far, my vote is for either Tobago or Eine Frage der Ahre, both delightful family games from last year. Samarkand: Routes to Riches is also quite fantastic but could be too recent. Anda if I had my way, Endeavor would at least get a nod....

  2. Tobago for sure!! Not sure about others.. small world will probably be nominated too.. although I'm still not sure how I feel about it...

  3. I never seem to really be aware of most of the nominations (unless they've already been published in English), and I'm also not exactly sure when things were published in German, but the only reasonable things that I've had experience with would be:

    Tobago
Dixit (based on the German release), and
    Roll Through the Ages

I'd love it if Endeavor got a mention as a recommended game or "special prize" something or other, but I sort of doubt it. I'll be happy if I know one or two of them...

  4. Dungeon Lords might make the cut as well.. but Tobago for the win. Just picked up a copy.

  5. You know I just don't get dixit.... I've played it a couple of times and it just doesn't seem fun to me.. perhaps I'm missing the point?

  6. Yeah, i gotta try Dixit. Others have mentioned that one. Read the rules for Dungeon Lords and found them quite overwhelming. But then every Vlaada game seems that way to me....

  7. One vote against Dungeon Lords. Takes too much time for what it is.

  8. I think the thing about dixit is it really REALLY depends on who you play with whether or not it's a gas. A game should be at least ok, no matter who you play with, in my opinion anyway.

  9. Ah yes, Mags, but party games are notoriously dependent on the IQ's and personalities of the people involved. For me, they often work better as icebreakers then as real board games...

  10. I guess so, perhaps I have just missed some element in the game...

  11. Dixit is sort of a simplified, artsy version of Balderdash (probably my favorite party game, by the way), except that Dixit is probably more accessible.

But still, in both you've got to think creatively and be able to play the meta-game of who is around the table and how you will phrase your description/answer. For non-gamers, it can be too much, and for people like us, it can sometimes be too light and fluffy.

  12. Will Forbidden Island be eligible. I never really knew when the cut off date for this award is. Everyone that plays this game gives it nothing but high praise. So its either this or Tobago.

  13. Is Smallworld a candidate?
